Former alderman Paul Kinkade dies 2004-09-03

Journal staff report Paul Kinkade, a former longtime Kankakee City alderman who saw his children follow him into public service, died today at the age of 78. Kinkade, a Republican who represented the 5th Ward, served on the city council from 1966 until his retirement in 1989. Defeated in his first run for the council in 1963, Kinkade was appointed to fill an unexpired term in '66 and was elected to six straight four-year terms before stepping down. He was also a Kankakee County building inspector for 18 years before retiring in 1990. His eldest son, Mike, is the current Kankakee police chief. He was appointed police chief in 2000. Another son, Jeff, has been a 2nd Ward city alderman since May 2001. The third son, Steve, is an Indianapolis, Ind., police officer. Jeff, the youngest of six children, said this morning that the family was always very impressed with their father's public service and that's why so many have become involved. Mr. Kinkade's three daughters are Paula Hart of Danville, Debbie Schultz of Kankakee, and Patti Pietraszewski of Bourbonnais. Steven Hunter is the city's senior alderman, serving the 7th Ward as a Democrat since 1973. When contacted today, Hunter shared fond memories of his former colleague. "He was a pleasure to work with on the council,'' Hunter said. "I learned a lot from him.'' Perhaps Hunter's most enduring memory was the sense of humor Kinkade held. "In this business, you have to have a sense of humor, and he had a tremendous sense of humor,'' Hunter said. "He always kept you in stitches.'' Hunter now works closely with Kinkade's sons and said they have done an admirable job of following in their father's footsteps. "He has an amazing family,'' Hunter said.

Ann Goggins loses her husband in a tragic accident. I will keep you updated as I learn more -

A Country Club Hills teen whose out-of-control van killed a Frankfort resident early Tuesday on Interstate 57 north of Manteno, was driving under the influence of drugs, according to state police. Darryl L. Montique, 18, was also cited for improper lane use and failure to wear a seatbelt following the 6:50 a.m. crash that killed Larry Offermann, 52, an employee of FCA Flooring Specialists of Bradley, and the husband of National City Bank executive Ann Goggins Offermann.

Offermann was dead at the scene, said Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner. Montique was taken to Provena St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries, said police. A report on his condition was not immediately available. Police said Montique’s northbound van crossed the median and struck Offermann’s auto head-on. Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner pronounced Offermann dead at the scene at 7:30 a.m. Gessner said Offermann was wearing a seatbelt. Dedicated to Our Loved Ones

Season’s Friend

My old friend Fall dropped by today – Came knocking at my door early morning – At first I was startled – Thought maybe Winter had come early But then as I opened the door the brightly colored leaves came blowin’ in – He whooshed through the door – “Just Me!” – “A little cool today, but just me . . ."

I invited him in to chat but I wandered – Couldn’t help thinking of where Summer had gone – Or as far as that goes, the child called Spring – Seemed just an hour or so ago it had been raining – Washing the coldness of winter overstay to the depths – Cardinals and finches had chattered about my bushes and I had just watched the first tulip’s head poke through – Fall is beautiful tho – painted leaves and little whirly-winds . . .

I turned back to the conversation of ours and found that Fall had grown old while chatting – Hoar frost covered his once colorful mane and his hands were trembling with a deep chill – I hurried off to fetch the brandy and upon return he was gone – And there whistling under the door came tiny white flakes that grew tall as the sun shrank through the crossed panes – I finished the brandy and opened the door to welcome Winter . . . . .
